Lately the weather has been a little cooler, which means fall is on its way and with fall comes the hockey season.
This coming hockey season is a big one for the Detroit Red Wings and their fans because of the Winter Classic and the Alumni Showdown.
After a night of staying up too late on New Year's Eve, the only thing I like to do on New Year's Day - every year - is watch the Winter Classic.
For those of you who don't know what that is, it's an outdoor hockey game played by two lucky teams. This hockey season the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs have the privilege of playing in the game. But the best part of this year's hockey season, and the part I'm most excited about, is the Alumni Showdown.
I grew up watching Red Wings hockey - and no other sport, really. That's just the way my family was. Through them, I learned a lot about the hockey greats and I'm more excited for the alumni to play than for the Winter Classic itself.
Seeing Mickey Redmond, Larry Murphy, Sergei Federov, Ted Lindsay, Igor Larionov, Dino Ciccerarelli, Mike Vernon - just pretty much the whole alumni lineup - play is just going to be amazing.
The coach for the Red Wings alumni team is going to be Scotty Bowman. I grew up watching that man lead the Red Wings to a Stanley Cup win in 1997, ending a 42-year drought. Then he continued to lead them through winning season after winning season. I'm pretty geeked to see this game, to say the least. I'm going to try my hardest to see it in person.
I can't even begin to explain how great it is to see all of those names on a roster together. Any hardcore Red Wings fan will understand what I mean and just how unbelievable this game is going to be - no matter what happens.
