Iron Range Class C race gets wild

ISHPEMING - While Buck's Party Store in Class A and Tino's 2 in Class B remain undefeated, the Class C race for first place has become a big jumble in the Iron Range Women's Softball League.

Top Class C teams Wooden Nickel and Rookies 1 lost last week to create a four-way tie for first place at 6-3 among the division's 10 teams, with four more teams within two games of the top.

Eastwood and Martin Sports Apparel also share first in Class C after posting wins.

Eastwood doubled up Rookies 1, 12-6, as the winners' Taryn Gleason and Nicole Briggs, who doubled, were both 2 for 3. Rookies' Charissa Johnson was 3 for 4, every hit a triple.

Martin Sports outscored Palomaki Family Chiropractic, 25-18, as Martin's Victoria Powelson and Kara Harrington were both 3 for 4 with a homer. PFC's Pat Zhulkie was 4 for 4, Barb Palomaki 3 for 4 and Mary Aho 2 for 4.

The Negaunee Eagles downed Country Lanes, 12-5, as winning pitcher Mary Rombouts recorded six strikeouts and teammate Joy Prisk cracked a three-run homer and Janice Fleming was 3 for 3.

Jean Kay's edged U.P. Fabricating, 4-3, with Jenna Skradski getting the win on the pitching rubber, while Chapper's Pub defeated Wooden Nickel, 14-7.

In Class A, Buck's bumped its record to 9-0 with a 10-2 win over Jasper Ridge Brewery 1. Libby Nelson was 4 for 4 with a triple and Jaime Conradson 3 for 3 for Buck's, while Kayla Holmes, LeAnn Saarela and Erika Roberts, who doubled, were all 2 for 3 for Jasper Ridge.

PC Medic improved to 8-1 by nipping Congress, 13-11, as the winners' Emily Hallum and Shannon Provost, along with Congress' Chelsie Wealton, were all 3 for 4.

Iracore is also 8-1 after blasting Crossfit 906, 17-2. Stacey Kruse led Iracore by homering twice and going 4 for 4, while teammates Meagan Petros and Danielle Sunne was 3 for 4. Crossfit's Lizzy VanBuren hit two doubles and Shannon O'Donnell homered.

Jubilee Foods won its second straight after an 0-6-1 start by getting by Cliffs Natural Resources, 15-11. Jubilee's Cathy Bertucci, Amanda Harlock and Crystal Conradson each had three hits, as did Cliffs' Cassy Sandberg and Karla Kramer. In addition, Cliffs' Nikki Schultz homered.

Teepee Bar rang up a 12-3 win over Rookies Too/Quality Car Care as five players went 3 for 4 - Teepee's Trudy Duquette, Penny Soucey and Jen Laurila, and Rookies' Connie Kontio and Erin LaValley.

Paradise Bar routed Hickey's, 14-2, with the winners' April Ulrickson going 4 for 4 with a double, Rachel Hytinen 3 for 4 with a homer and Lori Nelson 3 for 3. Hickey's Rachel Gray and Gina Prisk both homered.

In Class B, Tino's 2 kept its two-game lead with a 9-3 win over Dave's Collision. The winners' Taryn Moyle tripled and Jeanne Argall doubled as Argall and Dave's Kris Poirier were each 3 for 3.

U.P. Rehab Services just got by U.P. Off Road & Performance, 9-6, as Rehab's Beth Rae and Nicholle Uren both doubled and Off Road's Jessica Staley had a homer and double.

Sister's joined U.P. Rehab at 7-2 with a 17-2 victory over Jack's Teepee. Jesse Rosten hit two homers for the winners, while teammates Anna Dompierre and Sandie Whitford had one fourbagger apiece and Kimberley Nemetz, Linda Dompierre and Leah Dompierre all had triples. Jack's Tina Maki homered and Christy Gaboury was 2 for 2.

Signs Unlimited nudged Pasquali's, 14-13, as winning pitcher Emily Garceau registered six Ks and teammate Jenny Koski hit two homers. Pasquali's Deanna Dunn went 5 for 5.

VFW recorded a rare 11-0 shutout of Willey's Tire Shop as the winners' Sue Luokkala was 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Tracy Mitchell was 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Willey's Jenny Giraud had a double and Miranda Nelson a single.

Company B Graphics bludgeoned Jasper Ridge Brewery 2, 25-12, as CBG's Tayler Gray, Michelle Gray and Joanna Smail all went 4 for 4 and Christine Larson was 3 for 4. Larson hit two homers, each Gray had two doubles and Smail had one double.
