MARQUETTE - The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of education will look to approve a new full-time position at its meeting tonight.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. inside room 210 of the Graveraet School.

The position will entail assisting the district's school psychologist as well as handling any Section 504 claims made to the district. Section 504 is the section of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which applies to persons with disabilities.

Under Section 504, students can be handicapped if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, which can include things like communicable diseases, chronic asthma, severe allergies and diabetes, according to the Student Advocacy Center, an independent organization in Michigan that provides free, non-legal advocacy to students and families in Michigan.

The board has discussed the 504 administrative position in several board meetings, unable to come to an agreement on whether the recent increase of 504 claims made to the district warrants a new administrative position.

In other action, the board will discuss utilizing the Kaufman Auditorium and Courtyard for weddings, look at raising the secondary level breakfast price, consider a resolution on the Great Start Readiness Program, and approve its 2012-2013 calendar.

Jackie Stark can be reached at 906-228-2500, ext. 242.
