BAY CITY - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference will begin sponsoring women's lacrosse starting in 2012-13 featuring five full-time GLIAC members and four affiliate members.
Grand Valley State is the lone Michigan school to sponsor the sport while Ohio's Findlay, Lake Erie College, Tiffin University and newcomer, Walsh University. Affiliate members of the league will be Notre Dame College and Urbana University of Ohio and Alderson-Broaddus College and Wheeling Jesuit University of West Virginia.
The GLIAC now sponsors 22 sports - 11 men's/11 women's - after the addition of wrestling during the 2011-12 academic year.
With the addition of women's lacrosse, the GLIAC becomes the sixth NCAA Division II conference to sponsor the sport. Conference Carolinas, the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, the East Coast Conference, the Northeast-10 and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference also sponsor women's lacrosse. The GLIAC is the only D-II conference in the Midwest to sponsor the sport.
