MARQUETTE - The Houghton High School softball team split a doubleheader May 22 against the Marquette JV, losing 9-1 in Game 1 before bouncing back for a 14-2 victory in the nightcap.
Houghton managed just three hits and committed five errors in the opener, but had no errors in the second game, with Laura Ruohonen recording three hits.
Houghton scored three times in the first on a three-run homer from Jada Riutta. She and Brooke Sten had two hits apiece in game two.
"It was nice to see us come back and play well in the second game," Houghton manager Cathy Aten said. "We have been struggling the past two weeks committing too many errors and not hitting well.
"In the second game we played like we are capable of - no errors and our whole line-up hit, including Jada's home run," Houghton manager Cathy Aten said. "This is just what we need to do (tonight) against Ironwood to avenge our two losses to them earlier this month."
Brooke Sten got the win in game two, allowing five hits. Ruohonen took the loss in game one with eight hits against.
