NEGAUNEE — In an effort to eliminate a portion of the projected $1.5 million deficit for the 2010-2011 school year, the Negaunee Public Schools board of education voted Monday to lay off seven teachers.
“Our total budget is $12 million, so we’re over 10 percent of that budget that we have to cut. The program that you’re going to see in the fall is not the program we have right now,” said Superintendent Jim Derocher.
The board began taking action to eliminate that budget shortfall at its regular meeting Monday evening.
Laying off the seven staff members — five teachers from the Lakeview Elementary School, one teacher and one guidance counselor from the Negaunee High School — will save the district $433,000. Some of those teachers could be recalled, depending on the number of teachers who take advantage of early retirement incentives.
