MARQUETTE — Native American scholar, activist and author Ward Churchill closed out the Third Annual Indigenous Earth Issues Summit Monday at Northern Michigan University by looking at the link between destruction of Native American society and the environment.
Churchill shared his views on the genocide of the Native American people and the repression he said continues to this day. He also shared his beliefs about ecocide, or destruction of the natural environment — calling genocide and ecocide part of the same equation. Churchill warned genocide plus ecocide would lead to “omnicide,” or human extinction through human action.
