IHS tops Braves in HS bowl

The Ishpeming Hematites defeated the Gladstone Braves 370-90 in the second round of the Public TV 13 High School Bowl. Ishpeming advances to the third round against Westwood in a game scheduled to be telecast Feb. 21. Representing Gladstone, seated from left, are players Chris LaMarche, team captain Mike Martin, Josh Hallfrisch and Caleb Whitmer. Standing from left are show host G.G. Gordon, coach James Lund and alternate Dylan Tauzer. Players for Ishpeming, seated from left, are Brandon Van Buren, Stephen Weygandt, team captain Matt Waters and James Nevala. Standing from left are coach Kristin Swenor with alternates Brianna Junak and Jake Dault. Fifty U.P. and northern Wisconsin schools participate in the tournament with single-elimination play continuing until the championship match in April. High School Bowl is televised on WNMU-TV at 8 p.m. Saturdays and noon Mondays. Funding is provided by NewPage/Escanaba Operations, L. Blondeau & Sons Trucking and The Ray and Peg Hirvonen Foundation.
