NEGAUNEE - In the first day of the Negaunee Irontown Association alumni softball tournament Friday, three teams advanced.
In the 5:30 p.m. match-up, the Class of 1996 defeated 2007, led by winning pitcher John Dix, who also had an RBI and a triple. Paul Heino and Bruce Crookham also had doubles. Tim King had a double play to seal the victory.
In the second game, the Class of 2002 defeated 1998, 10-8, in an extra inning. Marcus Nelson was the winning pitcher. For '98, Heather York had two RBIs and Jason Stanaway had a hit to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth. For 2002, Ryan Giotto had a double in the second inning to score two runs and saved a home run hit by Kyle Bell with a leaping catch. Brad Ruesing had two RBIs in the top of the sixth inning.
In the last game of the evening, the Class of 1993 defeated 1995, 4-2.
Andy Evans was the winning pitcher. Dean Leece had a home run and a double, and Brandi Logan registered two key defensive plays to propel 1993.
Games are scheduled from noon to 5:15 p.m. Sunday.
Westwood Alumni Tournament
Six games were held July 4 in the Westwood Alumni Softball Tournament at Sunnyside Field in Ishpeming Township.
In the first game, 1981 got by 1980, 15-11. Ralph Uhl led 1981, going 4-for-4 with an inside-the-part home run. For 1980, D.J. Harrington was 3-for-5.
1984 defeated 1986 in the second game, 10-7. For 1986, E.J. Kostreva and Curt Kurin both were 3-for-3, while Jim Mitchell (4-for-4) and Greg
