Suspect wanted in stabbing

POSTED: May 12, 2008

MARQUETTE — A Honduran man suspected of stabbing a K.I. Sawyer man was arrested Saturday at the Westwood Mall.

Troopers from the Negaunee post of the Michigan State Police took the 25-year-old man into custody at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday with assistance from Marquette County Sheriff’s deputies.

He was charged with felonious assault and lodged in the Marquette County Jail, not having posted a $500,000 cash bond. He is not being identified until his arraignment on the charge this morning in Marquette’s 96th District Court.

Police said he was arrested without incident after being recognized by a citizen at the mall, who called police. The man had apparently been staying in a wooded area near the old Acocks facility off of County Road 492, where he had last been reported seen. Police believe he came out of the woods due to lack of food and proper clothing.

The man had been wanted in connection with a May 2 stabbing incident in K.I. Sawyer. The alleged stabbing happened at a West Branch Township residence at about 10:45 p.m. Police responded to the Marquette General Hospital emergency room at about 11:40 p.m. after a 28-year-old man arrived at the hospital with a suspected knife wound. He required surgery for the wound, which was in the abdominal area, police said.

Investigation indicated that the victim and the stabbing suspect are co-workers. Police said the two allegedly had an argument outside the residence, which led to the injury.
