Elizabeth M. ‘Beth’ Markantony

MARQUETTE — Elizabeth M. “Beth” Markantony, 92, of 772 Lost Creek Drive, Marquette, entered eternal life Thursday evening, May 8, 2008, at the Norlite Nursing Center, in the comforting care of her family and Norlite staff.


Born August 14, 1915, in Marquette, a daughter of Joseph and Maria (DiPietro) Markantony, Beth was a 1935 graduate of Graveraet High School. She did housework for a time before moving to Detroit, where she was employed in factory work during World War II. She moved to Ferndale, where she was employed as a sales clerk, and later department manager, with the S.S. Kresge Company. She retired in 1977. In 2001, Beth moved back to Marquette. She was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church and the Ferndale Senior Citizens Group, where she participated in several bus trips with the group. Beth was an avid Detroit Red Wings hockey fan, watching every game. In her leisure, she enjoyed handwork and craftwork, crocheting, and making Christmas ornaments.


Survivors include her sister, Mary Charbonneau-Wade of Yorba Linda, Calif.; brother, Anthony Markantony of Marquette; sister-in-law, Charlotte Markantony of Detroit; brother-in-law, Leonard Bur of Marquette; and nieces, Carol (John) Major of Marquette and Jan (William) Vail of Yorba Linda, Calif. In addition to her parents, Beth was preceded in death by sisters, Ann Silveri, Della Davis and Verna Bur; brothers, Mark, Victor and Joseph Markantony; a niece, Janice Anderson; and nephews, Michael Bur, David Charbonneau and Mark Markantony, Jr.


Friends may call at St. Christopher Catholic Church on Monday, May 12, beginning at 10 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Monday morning with the Rev. Frank Ricca as celebrant. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
