Ashley Nicole Phillips, 20, was sentenced to a year in jail on March 12 for conspiring to furnish contraband to jail inmates. The following day, during a routine cell search, deputies allegedly found a number of pills under a cot assigned to Phillips.
Marquette County Sheriff’s deputies said that although Phillips was properly searched before being lodged in jail and assigned sleeping quarters, she was allegedly able to hide the pills and bring them into the facility.
A search warrant was issued on March 13 and Phillips was taken to Marquette General Hospital, where she was medically examined for possible additional evidence. None was discovered.
After a report received on the pills from the Michigan State Police Forensic Laboratory, county prosecutors authorized charges of furnishing contraband to a prisoner and prisoner possessing contraband, both five-year felonies.
On Monday, Phillips was arraigned on the charges. A preliminary examination is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 16. Phillips remains in jail serving her one-year sentence.
