Protestors unhappy with permit decisionDecember 18, 2007
Protesters of a proposed Kennecott Mineral Co. mine in northern Marquette County made their way through downtown Marquette on Monday, stopping briefly in front of The Mining Journal office, above. On Friday, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality approved three principal permits for the company’s proposed nickel and copper mine. While approvals are still needed from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the mining company hopes to begin construction in late spring.
