Ishpeming business gets boost from energy efficiency
Since moving into its historic Ishpeming building in June 2008, Stonehouse Window and Door has seen a lot of business from people wanting to improve the energy efficiency of their homes, by installing more insulating windows, for example. The business has done some of its own renovations by updating its showroom while staying true to the building’s history. (Journal photo by Johanna Boyle)
ISHPEMING — Although the economy has slowed some aspects of the building industry, a new demand is keeping things busy for one new Ishpeming business. Stonehouse Window and Door, which opened in June 2008, has been keeping up a steady business from homeowners interested in making their homes more energy-efficient, in the form of new windows or insulation, to avoid higher heating costs. “All our products have energy efficiency ratings,” said store manager Billy Hill, whose parents Joanne and Terry Hill own the store. “People are kind of going that way rather than new construction.” The store sells “anything that goes on a house,” Billy Hill said, from windows to heating stoves to insulation. The Hills had to do their own renovation to get the brownstone building ready, including putting in a heating source and insulating some of the interior walls. The original floors and beams have been kept, however, to preserve the historic nature of the building, Joanne Hill said.
