MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula lost an icon of faith and community involvement Dec. 10 when Monsignor Louis Cappo died.

He had spent 61 years serving as a priest in the Catholic Church in the Upper Peninsula, and had been the rector of St. Peter Cathedral since 1975.

Cappo, who would have been 88 on Dec. 16, went to the hospital with pneumonia a few days before his death.

A funeral Mass was held Dec. 13 at the cathedral, with hundreds of parishioners, community members and clergy in attendance.

Marquette Diocese Senior Pastor Tom Poisson gave the homily, and said, “Even at his age and health condition, he was always involved as long as it was to meet the need of the people of this beloved Upper Peninsula.
