Favre gone, conclusion
Right after Brett Favre made his tearful retirement speech in March, a number of people asked me when I would be writing a column about the veteran Green Bay Packer quarterback’s career. My response was always the same: When it’s really over. Despite the tears, despite the weariness in Favre’s voice at that farewell session, it just didn’t seem to me that Favre was going to stay away from the football field forever. Little did I imagine, however, the nightmarish media circus that would result when Favre did announce his plans to return. “As the Football Turns” is what I have been calling it. Now after weeks of recriminations, accusations, hurt feelings and confusion, it really is over. Favre has been traded to the New York Jets and the Packers are beginning the post-Brett era in a fashion that defies anything anyone could have conjured up to make the Green Bay faithful livid. There’s plenty of blame to go around.
