USOEC shines with Olympic spirit
Sugar Loaf Mountain may not be the home to gods, but it is impossible to deny the Olympic spirit found around Marquette. In the span of a week, at least four Olympians bound for Beijing for the 2008 Summer Games could be found in the Superior Dome, such as United States Olympic Education Center Greco-Roman wrestler Spenser Mango, who recently won a national championship. Two more members from that wrestling program still might travel to China to represent the USA, as well. Meanwhile, Marquette’s own John “Doc” Lehtinen will assist the medical staff. A week earlier, two members of USA Boxing’s coaching staff were in town for the Junior Olympic boxing national championships. And of course, we all know 1996 Olympic Boxing coach Al Mitchell, who calls Marquette his home. It remains impressive just how humble these people can be, despite their achieving the pinnacle of their athletic careers while myriad others will never reach such dreams.
