Ishpeming falls; Westwood rolls
ISHPEMING — Ishpeming High School opened its girls tennis season with a loss, swept 8-0 by Iron Mountain. “We’re a young team, and it was our first meet after a week of practice,” Ishpeming coach Erl Langness said. “There were some promising things in some of the areas. “The girls performed about where they should be for the amount of time they’ve been playing tennis.” The four singles matches result in straight set sweeps in Iron Mountain’s favor, but the Hematites did win a set in doubles play. Tonia Brewer/Britney Racine ultimately lost to Iron Mountain’s Alyssa Celello and Emily Casanova after winning the opening set, 6-4. They fell 2-6, 2-6 in the following sets. Westwood blanks Gwinn Westwood High School opened its 2008 girls tennis season with a bang Monday, sweeping host Gwinn, 8-0. All matches were in straight sets. NEGAUNEE — The location for Meet the Miners Night, which is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, has been changed.

Fence headed to world tournament
MARQUETTE — The Marquette Fence men’s fastpitch softball team is ready for the North American Fastpitch world tournament in North Mankato, Minn.
Fence opens play Thursday against the Fisher Group from Minnesota.
Beaudoin cards first hole-in-one
MARQUETTE — Don Beaudoin of Marquette recorded his first-ever hole-in-one Monday at Marquette Golf Club’s Heritage Course.
Beaudoin used a 6-iron on the 134-yard 14th hole to accomplish his feat.
