An updated, nearly complete 2013-14 Northern Michigan hockey schedule [5/20 UPDATE: Now complete and official]

March 27, 2013 - Matt Wellens

UPDATE: NMU has officially released its 2013-14 schedule. The schedule originally compiled by the blog is updated below. [May 20, 5 p.m.]

MARQUETTE — The National Collegiate Hockey Conference released its inaugural composite schedule on Wednesday and it provided key dates to fill out the Northern Michigan University hockey team’s yet-to-be released 2013-14 schedule.

The WCHA released its composite conference schedule back on March 7 and I was able to break down most of it here.

At the time, Nebraska-Omaha, Wisconsin and North Dakota were the Wildcats only nonconference foes scheduled for 2013-14 and according to my sources, NMU and Western Michigan weren’t set to begin their nonconference rivalry until 2014-15. That’s changed and now the two schools who were once ruled by Judith Bailey meet Nov. 9-10 in Kalamazoo in a Saturday-Sunday series.

Like the previous two seasons, NMU has once again stacked its nonconference schedule with quality opponents that can put it in position to reach the NCAA tourament, including one Big Ten school and three NCHC schools. Wisconsin and North Dakota are both in the NCAA tourney this year and Western was the last team left out. Omaha finished No. 30 in the PairWise rankings.

The addition of Western brings Northern to 36 games for 2013-14. NMU can schedule two more games because it travels to both Fairbanks and Anchorage — games played in the state of Alaska do not count toward the NCAA limit of 34 regular season games — but unless it can get a home series, expect the ’Cats to stay at 36 with eight home series and 10 road series.

The lack of home series should be troubling to NMU fans, however, it’s not the program’s fault this time around.

NMU had originally scheduled a nonconference home series against Alabama-Huntsville before it was admitted into the WCHA. Once in, the league replaced one home series against another opponent with a home series against UAH, plus added a league trip to Huntsville for NMU. The result is the Wildcats losing a revenue-generating, nonconference home series in March.

Send your thanks to WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod for that one.
