NMU Sports Three Stars (Jan. 7-13/Jan. 14-20)

MARQUETTE — Turns out the Inside 1401 Sports Blog is not better than the rest of the world that breaks New Years resolution, because one week after declaring I would blog more, I broke that promise with the NMU Sports Three Stars.

In my defense, I was kind of busy chasing another small story in the world of college hockey.

So after spending a rare Monday at the Berry Events Center gathering what I needed for The Mining Journal this week before hockey team left for Fairbanks, Alaska, I return Tuesday with a double dose of the NMU Sports Three Stars.

This works just like three stars in hockey with the third star being the third best performance and first star being the top performer of the week. All NMU varsity NCAA teams are eligible — from hockey to skiing to golf — and a week will be considered Monday through Sunday.

Here are the honorees from last week and the week before. Congrats to the victors on such a prestigious award, which is chosen by such a prestigious panel — me.

NMU Sports Three Stars

Jan. 14-20

Third star

Alyssa Colla, women’s hoops — The sophomore led the Wildcats in scoring in a win over Saginaw Valley State on Thursday and a loss to Wayne State on Saturday. She was perfect from the free throw line, hitting 6 of 6 FTs en route to 20 total points. On Saturday, her 15 points matched the 15 posted by fellow sophomore guard Lauren Gruber.

Second star

CJ Ludwig, men’s hockey — The junior defenseman is the CCHA Defenseman of the Week after posting two points in a weekend sweep of Ohio State at the Berry Events Center. Ludwig had an assist in Friday’s 4-2 win and scored his fourth goal of the season in Saturday’s 3-2 win. He was +2 on the weekend with three blocked shots.

First star

Sam Elfstrom, men’s Nordic skiing — The freshman from Shoreview, Minn., who turns 19 on Feb. 23, won the junior 10-kilometer classic race in 25:32.2 on Sunday at the Tour de Twin Citier SuperTour at Wirth Park in Minneapolis. Elfstrom was 57th in the 10-kilometer freestyle on Saturday.

Ryan Daugherty, men’s hockey — The sophomore forward made a phenomenal shorthanded play in a 3-3 tie against No. 3 Miami on Saturday, forcing a turnover at the blue line before walking in the game-tying goal with less than two and a half minutes to play. He also had an assist in Friday’s 2-1 win.

Second star

Kyle Bratrud, men’s Nordic skiing — The Eden Prairie, Minn., sophomore was named to the United States Ski Team for the U23 World Championships in the Czech Republic Jan. 21-27. Bratrud was one of six skiers selected from the 2013 U.S. Cross Country Championships in Utah. He scored 125 points in the races, ranking him fourth among his teammates on Team USA.

First star

Jared Coreau, men’s hockey — The junior goaltender stopped 43 shots, including 20 in the third period, on Friday in a 2-1 win over No. 6 Miami at the Berry Events Center. On Saturday, Coreau stopped 29 shots in a 3-3 tie with the RedHawks.
