Seckel, Follmer, Coreau named CCHA Players of the Week
January 7, 2013 - Matt Wellens
MARQUETTE — Three Northern Michigan University hockey players were honored as CCHA Players of the Week following the Wildcats sweep of the St. Cloud State Huskies in St. Cloud, Minn.
Kyle Follmer, a senior defenseman, was the CCHA Defenseman of the Week after scoring both nights against the Huskies. Both goals were his first of the season.
On the defensive end, Follmer finished with three blocked shots over the two games, but his most notable defensive contribution came Friday.
Follmer was at the right place at the right time when an SCSU shot from the point deflected up off the shoulder of NMU junior goaltender Jared Coreau. Before the puck could drop down past the NMU goal line, however, Follmer was there to swat the puck away and out of harm’s way with his glove. The play earned Follmer the No. 8 spot on the Saturday SportsCenter Top 10 plays.
Reed Seckel, a sophomore forward, was named the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals and an assist against SCSU. Seckel had two goals in a 6-2 win on Friday and a goal and assist in the 2-1 win on Saturday with his goal being the game-winner.
Seckel, who has eight goals and seven assists, leads NMU in goals scored and is a point back of senior Matt Thurber for the team-high in points.
Coreau was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week after stopping 21 shots on Friday and 37 shots on Saturday. Coreau has started in all 21 games for NMU this season, sporting a 2.66 goals against average and .918 save percentage.
Western Michigan freshman forward Colton Hargrove prevented an NMU sweep of the league’s weekly awards by winning the CCHA Rookie of the Week honor after scoring twice against Bemidji State on Friday.
NMU (8-10-3 overall, 2-9-3 in CCHA) hosts No. 6 Miami at 7:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.
