NMU Hockey Series Snapshot (Tuesday Special): Purple rain in the BEC's forecast for tonight
December 4, 2012 - Matt Wellens
MARQUETTE — Welcome to a special Tuesday edition of the NMU Hockey Series Snapshot as Northern Michigan hosts Michigan Tech tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.
Part II of this rivalry takes places at 7:07 p.m. on Feb. 12 in Houghton.
This rivalry — now in its last season as a nonconference series with NMU rejoining the WCHA after this season — always features plenty of extracurricular activities on the ice, but there will be a few more off the ice as well tonight.
Friends, family and teammates of Wildcat freshman soccer player Arianna Alioto, 18, who drowned Friday at the PEIF pool on the NMU campus, are encouraging everyone to wear the color purple today in Alioto’s honor. Purple was the Wildcat’s favorite color.
During the first intermission, NMU’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will be holding its annual Teddy Bear Toss to benefit Toys for Tots drive. That’s two periods tonight of being allowed to throw things on the ice with chuck-a-puck in the second intermission. Hope you all have your arm all warmed up.
In between the intermissions of throwing things and stoppages for shoving and jersey grabbing, there should be some hockey tonight at the BEC between the Huskies and Wildcats.
Both teams are looking to rebound from less-than-stellar weekends, the Wildcats in particular.
NMU was swept on the road by Western in Kalamazoo, and while the team’s minds appreciate the chance to erase that series quick, their bodies might not considering the team arrived back from downstate around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The Huskies remained in Houghton this weekend, but lost and tied Minnesota-Duluth to the tune of 7-3 and 4-4.
The Huskies went through an early stretch this season playing only two games in 26 days. Now Tech finds itself in a stretch of five games in nine days, with a trip to Madison, Wis., to looming to play the Wisconsin Badgers after tonight’s game.

If you can’t make it to the BEC tonight, NMU and MTU both use the same live streaming video service and cost is $7 per game.
NMU and 100.3 FM The Point also offer a free online audio feed with Dave Danis on the call.
Of course, you can follow me on Twitter throughout the game for updates and analysis. Also make sure to check back here at MiningJournal.net before the game for line charts and after for postgame interviews and the NMU Hockey Report.
