NMU Football Game Day Guide: Wildcats host Ferris State in season finale
November 10, 2012 - Matt Wellens
MARQUETTE — Welcome to the season finale of the NMU Football Game Day Guide as the Northern Michigan University football team closes the 2012 season with a Senior Day celebration against Ferris State. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. inside the Superior Dome.
The Wildcats will honor their 12 seniors prior to the game, including offensive lineman Jace Daniels of Escanaba. He’s one of four Yoopers playing his final collegiate game.
After starting the season 1-5 and 0-5 in the GLIAC, NMU has won three of its last four games against its North Division rivals. The ’Cats latest victim was Saginaw Valley State a week ago at the Superior Dome.
In the victory, Wildcat senior kicker Rockne Belmonte set the record for most fields made in a career at NMU, by hitting four of his five field goal attempts, including a 55-yarder.
The performance earned him the honor of GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week for a second time this season, as well as D2Football.com’s Special Teams Player of the Week honor.
Meanwhile down in Big Rapids, Ferris State is coming off a 38-33 loss at home to Northwood. The Bulldogs blew an early 13-0 lead in the defeat.
And to add salt to the Bulldogs’ wounds, the loss came against its former head coach Jeff Pierce, who is now the defensive backs coach at Northwood. Pierce was fired at the end of last season following a 6-5 campaign. Ferris enters Marquette with a 6-4 overall mark.
