MARQUETTE — Residents’ movement against a proposed landfill in Marquette Township gained momentum Monday night when they organized into a group calling itself “STOPPP”“STOP Polluting our Property.” Although the group was organized to generally oppose environmental damage in the Marquette area, spokeswoman Chris Corkin said the proposed landfill site in Marquette Township is its current target. “The group is growing quickly in numbers … and we hope to get representatives from all sections of the township,” Corkin said.

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP — The new Marquette County Airport will be dedicated Sept. 22 with federal and state aeronautical officials joining county dignitaries in officially opening the new Negaunee Township field. In addition to the more convenient location, the port offers much-improved working conditions, as shown in the smiles of North Central Airlines crew Warren Branscomb, first officer; Elmer Sarasin, local ticket agent; Miss Pat Ruch, stewardess; and Vernon Turner, flight captain.

The new airport, built at a cost of only $25,000 to the county, will be the scene of much activity Sunday. Weather permitting, many guest planes will join the three scheduled flights at the field during the afternoon. Band music will entertain the spectators before brief talks start.

Starting at $4.62/week.
